Autoethnographic animation and the metabolism of trauma.

Autoethnographic animation and the metabolism of trauma.

Autoethnographic animation and the metabolism of trauma.

Lived, researched and practiced.

I'm Susan Young, a BAFTA-nominated animation director with 40+ years of experience in independent production. From United Nations commissions and David Byrne collaborations to pioneering research on animation as a therapeutic mental health intervention, my work combines groundbreaking creative practice with academic rigour.

My Royal College of Art (RCA) PhD explores how animation can help process psychological trauma and transform lived experience into meaningful creative expression.

My RCA PhD explores how animation can serve as a therapeutic intervention for psychological trauma. Currently being developed into a book with Routledge (2027), this research documents my experiences of surviving attempted murder and developing a career-ending hand injury, and my subsequent PTSD journey and establishment of an animation methodology for trauma survivors.
